Technical background

The black and white photographs of Jan C Schlegel are taken with a 4×5 field camera (Ebony SV45 Ti) on tradional film (Kodak Tmax). They are not digitally edited, but enlarged on fiber base photographic paper (Maco Multibrom F) in his own laboratory.

Afterwards, each photographic print is partially toned (Jan’s own mixture) in order to give each picture its special inner dynamics and depth. Often this process takes several hours and turns out differently with each picture. This way each piece is unique.

To finish the process, each picture is Selen toned which guarantees its maximum life.
